Community Spotlight: Woods Services

Community Help

What is community? Is it a spot on a map? Is it a group of people you share your days around? Perhaps at its heart, community is more than just a collection of buildings or people.

Community is something we feel deep down inside. It’s knowing that you matter to someone else. That you’re accepted just the way you are. That you have a place where you can achieve your dreams.

For some of us, finding community can be a challenge. That’s where the people at Woods Services come in. Although their work is diverse, their goals are simple – to advance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities and to create a community from which they can achieve their greatest potential.

As a friendly neighbor, we want to shine a light on this phenomenal organization and share its incredible message of community and care.

From a Farmhouse School to World-Renowned Institution

In 1913, Philadelphia schoolteacher Mollie Woods had a vision: to create an institute focused on helping children which we today recognize as special needs.

In her words, Mollie wanted a place where special needs children, “… meet the problems of everyday life, to make normal adjustments, to acquire sources of satisfaction for the present as well as for later years, and to know the joy of achievement.”

In simplest terms, Mollie Woods wanted to create a community for those who so often go unnoticed.

From her farmhouse in Roselyn, PA, she opened The Research Institute. Creating an individualized program of support for each student, her compassionate and science-based approach was soon recognized and celebrated throughout the region.

By 1934, the Institute outgrew its humble schoolhouse and moved to its permanent location in Langhorne, PA. Set on a sprawling campus, it now serves over 600 children, adolescents, adults, and seniors from across the country.

To Mollie, each individual who attended the Institute was more than the sum of their limitations. To her, they were exceptional.  This belief is held by the present staff who carry on her vision at Woods Services every day.

How Does Woods Services Create Community?

Today, the bulk of work being done at Woods falls under their full-time residential services. Providing group homes both on-campus and spread throughout the local community, residents are able to lead a more independent life while under the 24-hour care of Woods’ professional team.

Able to serve individuals starting from early childhood through their senior years, Woods also provides therapeutic services, educational programs along with vocational opportunities both on-site and within the local community.

Woods also offers short-term residential treatment and services for individuals living with autism, Prader-Willi, brain injury, and developmental disabilities. These programs are designed to help individuals and their families create pathways to a happier and more fulfilling life.
